Q1: There is a kanji I looked up which does not have an animation?
ShinKanji’s database contains more than 3200 kanji animation. I will happily add any new ones which are suggested to me. When version 1.0 came to the appstore the number of animation was 2300, you can see that progress are made.
Q3: I think this program is awesome but I think feature XXX will make it even better, how do I ask for it?
ShinKanji is actively being developped by myself. I have a list of pending features already but I am glad for any suggestion. I can’t garantee when they will be available in the store but I can tell you what priority they will have in my list.
Q4: You keep talking about the list of features you intend to implement, can we take a peek?
Although I can’t give you a date at which any of this will be
available, here is the list. I will also update the status on each
feature.

Q5: What is the difference between Shinkanji, Shinkanji-lite and Shinkanji-search-free?
Shinkanji is the full feature (for pay) application. Shinkanji-lite and Shinkanji-search-free are both free application with a subset of the Shinkanji features. Together they demonstrate of the features in Shinkanji.
In other words Shinkanji is like shinkanji lite with the capability to search for any kanji by:
- handwriting recognition
- radical search
- meanings
- readings
- direct input (using the iphone japanese keyboards)
and the ability to search for compound words by:
- meaning
- reading
- direct input.
Shinkanji-lite:
shows all the kanji information including:
- readings
- meanings (in all available languages based on kanjidic2)
- animated stroke order diagrams
- structural navigation
- compound words containing kanji
On the other hand the kanji searches are limited to a set of predefined list.
Shinkanji-search-free:
shows all the kanji searches available including:
- Handwriting recognition using a large drawing area, undo/redo support and 10 proposed kanjis
- Multi-Radical search enabling selection of multiple radicals and stroke numbers (absolute, minimum, maximum or ranges)
- search by meanings
- search by readings (on-yomi, kun-yomi or both)
- direct search using apple provided japanese keyboards, kana pad and handwriting recognition
On the other hand the only information displayed about the found kanji is the english meanings and the kanji itself

Hi
Is it possible to increase the size of the font to make hiragana larger?
Thanks
Yes it is now possible, there is a slider in the appearance part of the settings to increase the size of the fonts
Hi, I’m probably missing something really obvious, but how do I search for a kanji compound word using the handwriting interface? In other words, say if the word is ??, I would write ?, then ?, and I would see a list of all the dictionary entries containing ??, ie ????????and so on.
Just writing ??and then having to search through all the compounds that contain ? takes too long.
Hello, sorry if your kanji don’t show up in the comment interface, seems to be a problem with wordpress.
To answer your question it is not yet possible. you can search compounds using the compound search functionality (in the compound screen) but you can’t use handwriting for this. I am planning to introduce this functionality but it is not there yet.
The enhancement request 49 is there to remind me about it.
Unfortunately it is not in the version 3.2.0.16 which I have just submitted to apple, probably in the next one.

Hi,
I write for http://www.mobileinjapan.com and I’m just about to start a series of app reviews.
Would it be possible to have a code for Shin Kanji (and any other Japanese-study apps you make) as I’d like to include it in my review. British, Japanese or US store would be great.
Many thanks
Joseph Tame
Hello! Are there any plans to port your Shinkanji app to other operating systems? Like android for example? If not, maybe you know of some application of equal value for other system not apple supported?
Thank you very much in advance!
It may happen but not soon as improving the iPhone/iPad version is already taking all my time. The next priority would then be another iPhone app for kanji quizzes. And only then would I be interested I. Rewriting my app from scratch for android (which would be needed as the platforms are incompatible). Unfortunately I don’t know any android apps. Sorry if I couldn’t be of more help
Unfortunaty
What kanji recognition algotithm have you implemented? Is the same algorithm of KanjiPad and JStroke? Is your software GNU GPL?
Greetings
Hello,
it is indicated in the about of the application, I use a modified version of zinnia. This is different from JStroke. I don’t know what KanjiPad is using.
My application is not GPL.
Best regards
Benoit
I wanted to check in about going directly from the handwriting lookup to a list of compound words (follow-up to the Feb 4th comment above). Is this part of the recent 3.4 release? This looks like a great application and really fills a need for those of us trying our best to read kanji in context.
Not yet, still planned for the next one I am afraid. The 3.4 big improvements are the following:
1) support for ios 4 fast app switching
2) support for compound bookmarks
3) support for copy paste of kanji and bookmarks
4) import export of kanji bookmarks
5) improved iPad UI
6) several bug fixes
Some of those things specially 1, 5, 6 had to be sent to apple in a hurry so I postponed the request 49 which requires lots of thinking in term of UI.
Basically for iPad it won’t be a problem I know how to do it, for the phones/ipod, I still need to see how to consistently integrate the word list results with the kanji lists, it is non trivial.
Best regards
Benoit
PS:
when this is done it will probably be a 4.0 version by the way. Part of the problem is that what we want is to build a word for a word search based on several kanji search results. I think that this should be done from the word search panel, and we need some field to collate the kanji selected from search result to build a word, also a button next to it to say we are done, lets run the word search on the word I have build. Such thing take precious space in an already crowded UI.
Bonjour,
